iTunes needs built-in LAN management

Friday, March 2nd, 2007

Both of these tutorials are great, but one thing strikes me — this stuff should be a *lot* easier. Average Jane and Joe are not going to do this. Hell, I’m a technonerd and I’m not even going to bother doing it. If companies like Apple and Micro$oft really want to get into our living […]

Splashcast launch

Tuesday, January 30th, 2007

I was happy to get a chance to check out Splashcast, my pal Marshall’s new project. It’s launching tomorrow (er, today for us east coasters) at DEMO — one of my channels is playing above (or will be, once it’s launched! ). It’s a fun “source agnostic” media creation tool, letting you pull in […]

Apple iPhone: OMG

Tuesday, January 9th, 2007

With one fell swoop, Steve Jobs completely eclipsed any of the news we’ve seen so far here at CES. There’s really not too much else to be said about the iPhone other than “how freaking soon can i have one in my pocket?”
Apple drops the word “computer” from its name whilst RIM and Palm go […]

Leetspeak Lord of the Rings

Tuesday, November 21st, 2006

Two of my favorite franchises mashed up in this leetspeak WoW-themed adaptation of LoTR:

Weird Al awesome: Don’t download this song

f’ing brilliant.

Footloose in Star Wars Galaxies

Sunday, November 12th, 2006

Major media moguls should be studying the playbooks of game companies, who have a lot to teach them about participatory culture (or, “how to embrace your fans instead of suing them”).

Btw if you haven’t yet read Henry Jenkins‘ book Convergence Culture — run, don’t walk.

Nicely conceived and produced concept… anyone who’s actually done this quest (which will be almost anyone who’s leveled an Alliance character other than night elves who leveled on Darnassus) will appreciate this even more deeply:

Flickr adds geotagging, nerds rejoice

Monday, August 28th, 2006

This is friggin’ sweet. Yay for hiring Dan Catt and delivering this gorgeous map UI. Here’s how to geotag your photos.
Any geobloggers.com users will be happy to know that Flickr will automagically prompt to import your geotagged photos.

This is our world

You gotta check out this video produced by a group of inner-city high school kids for their English class. Background on the City Voices, City Visions program that made this possible.

Joanna Newsom — The Sprout and the Bean

Tuesday, March 21st, 2006

Judith turned me on to Joanna Newsom a while back, and I just found this video on Google vids to share with you…

Second Life Thriller mashup

Saturday, January 14th, 2006

So i’m fascinated by these MMO mashups… here’s another winner.
Also noting that beyond launching a craptastic video-on-demand service, Google did something IMHO far more interesting when they added easy embed code into Google video so people can easily publish vids to their blogs/MySpace/etc…

Call for participation: CHI 2006 Workshop: Sexual Interactions

Monday, December 5th, 2005

I was asked to post this and am happy to oblige, throwing in my support for the conjugal union of sex and technology as well as the thought and discourse attached to that union… let’s talk about SexTech, baby. Let’s talk about UMD.

FCC mandates switch to ADHDTV programming by 2007

Wednesday, November 30th, 2005

Totally brilliant piece from The Onion:

“…we are recommending, in accordance with the ADHDTV standard, that all shows be no more than six minutes in length, and that they contain jarring and unpredictable camera cuts to shiny props and detailed background sets.”

I/O Brush

Wednesday, November 16th, 2005

i want one. this is how easy remix art should be. i want a similar tool to “imprint” audio and “paint” it on a canvas, like Ableton Live with a sensitive audio-recording stylus.

NBC, CBS: close, but no cigar

Wednesday, November 9th, 2005

What’s wrong with this picture:

Hours after those shows first air on the network each week, they will be “pushed” to DirecTV Plus DVRs, where they will be stored digitally and available the next morning for customers to select and play at their convenience for 99 cents.

What? You’re joking. You’re going to ask me to pay […]

Apple throws down video iPod

Wednesday, October 12th, 2005

Damn. I totally want one. I’m not a TV watcher but for those folks who are… this is gonna be killer. I hope Apple starts promoting videoblogging as strongly as they’ve done with podcasting.

Mashups in the middle

Tuesday, October 4th, 2005

Ran across J.D. Lasica’s video via Josh Wolf — it’s a great compillation of some of the mashups on Ourmedia that are pushing the envelope of “fair use.” The soundtrack is a phenomenal remix of Imagine and Wild Side with vocals spliced in from none other than our current Commander in Thief. It’s a must-listen.

Apple and the iPodcast trademark

Friday, September 16th, 2005

I’m getting tons of flak over on Engadget for my post on Apple’s iPodcast trademark. YES! This is what it’s all about.
If you’re averse to clicking over, here’s the soundbite: “screw you and the RSS 2.0 enclosure you rode in on!”

Thoughts on the eBay-Skype acquisition

I posted some concerns about this buyout being bad for open source VoIP over on the Social Software Weblog.

iTunes library sharing needs write access; iTunes phone sucks; media organization needs serious help

Monday, September 12th, 2005

So it’s great that I can play anything in any of my now six friggin’ iTunes libraries on any machine in the house. It really kind of sucks that that access is read-only, however. I know the whole sharing functionality is designed to share your collection with others on your network, in which case you’d […]

Guide to DRM in layperson’s terms

Major record label to try new business model; hath hell frozen over?

Monday, August 22nd, 2005

Well, not completely — the announcement made by Warner Music’s CEO Edgar Bronfman Jr. was a mixture of “getting it” and “not getting it,” but the proposal that will be implemented is actually rather encouraging. They’re setting up an e-label that will be completely physical product-free: no CDs will be manufactured whatsoever, and online will […]

Yahoo launches beta audio search

Friday, August 5th, 2005

Yahoo rolled out the beta test of the audio search tool they’ve been working on for a few months. It’s pretty sweet so far, and is now the third reason (along with their video search and Creative Commons search) I’ll be going to them instead of to Google. But I ask you this — […]

Amazon to launch music download service?

Thursday, August 4th, 2005

Now that everybody, they sister and they cousin, too already has a music download service, it looks like Amazon is about to enter the fray with their own offering. Not a lot of details yet, and it’s not even confirmed, but damn if it doesn’t make a lot of sense. They’ve sat back and watched […]

ABCNews’s interactive Google Earth map of the London bombings

Friday, July 8th, 2005

ABCNews, of all outlets, has put up an interactive Google Earth map of yesterday’s bombings in London. The times, they are a-changin’.

Flickr + Yahoo = video Flickr?

Wednesday, May 25th, 2005

Okay, this is nothing more than raging idle speculation, but I live for this stuff. Anyway, I have this crazy idea that Yahoo will incorporate some Flickr-ness into their video search and make some sort of service for video sharing. Wishful thinking, perhaps. But it could make a fine complement to open video aggregators like […]
